Spelthorne was formed as a result of the 1974 Local Government reorganisation with the merger of Staines and Sunbury upon Thames Urban District Councils.

There are currently approximately 100,000 residents in this Borough west of London, bounded broadly by Heathrow Airport to the north, London to the east, River Thames to the south and west and M25 north west.

The current political makeup of Spelthorne Borough Council is currently as follows

• 17 Conservative
• 7 Lib-Dem
• 6 United Spelthorne
• 4 Labour
• 2 Green
• 2 Independent
• 1 Unaffiliated Independent

• 39 Total Councillors

Currently Conservative minority controlled  but at a Council meeting pon 30th July 2020 Council voted to return to the “committee system” which will deliver a more politically proportionate system. This is due to take effect in May 2021
